Technology drivers, shifts in delivery, emerging context variables, and new business models are attracting the one thing that matters most to innovation and scale--money. While there is still a dearth of government and foundation investment in learning research and development, the private sector is finally stepping in. The education market has been so unattractive for so long that for the least few decades there have been few venture-backed startups and, with the exception of career colleges, little growth capital has been aimed at learning. Global markets and consumer learning have, in particular, spurred investment leading. There is finally gas in the tank for education entrepreneurs.

Interest is growing in online learning courses in the kindergarten through grade 12 school segment, and more than half of the nation's public elementary and secondary schools could be offering students online learning programs within the next two years, media industry forecast and analysis firm Simba Information projects in its most recent research report, Moving Online: K-12 Distance Learning Market Forecast 2010. According to a survey conducted by Simba Information and Market Data Retrieval in February 2010, about one-third of schools have some kind of online program in 2009-2010, and another 20% expect a program will be started by 2011-2012.

Hybrid foreign language courses introduced for summer - Amanda Munger, UW Oshkosh TodayUniversity of Wisconsin Oshkosh students can now work on part of their foreign language requirements from home. Hybrid courses, a mix of online learning and in-the-classroom instruction, are being introduced as part of the foreign language department’s 2010 Summer Session offerings.Catherine Bryan, co-chair of the foreign language department, said hybrid classes combine the convenience of online courses and the personal learning of regular classes.
